2020: 5 Flagship Trends in Mobile

Posted on April 28, 2020 at 10:00 am

2020 — the year the world will see astronomical changes in how technology impacts our lives. Four months in and one can argue we’ve already seen drastic shifts in the ways technology can effect our lives as we work through the challenges of a global pandemic. As we look to the remainder of the year, take a look at the top mobile technology trends that will influence us.

When 5G becomes the new normal

According to a study by Qualcomm, it is estimated that by 2035, $13.2 trillion worth of goods and services produced will be enabled by 5G mobile technology which could directly support 22.3 million jobs worldwide. So what does it hold for us in 2020 and the ensuing few years? Following cues from Verizon and AT&T in the US, more mobile carriers across the world are likely to speed up the roll-out of infrastructure required to upgrade their networks to the new 5G standard. The cornerstone of the current version of 5G will be lower latency which would make virtual reality experience more immersive and improve communication between connected devices.

The coming of age moment for Augmented and Virtual Reality

Augmented and Virtual Reality could directly benefit from the reduced latency of a 5G network which would incentivize developers to build apps that will mainstream VR and make this technology beneficial for non-gamers as well. Use cases around live VR broadcast of sporting events, virtual reality classrooms for better student engagement, a new shopping experience through VR kiosks and last but not the least, VR in healthcare where the technology is leveraged for training, simulation and diagnostics, offer exciting sneak peek into a world where the virtual plays a significant role in solving real-world problems.

M-Powering Social IoT Through Low Latency 5G

2020 could well be the year when IoT becomes truly social, where connected devices generate and share data with each other. In a manufacturing setup, this means that machines can make decisions concerning their health and maintenance after evaluating data generated by itself and the other machines in its ‘social’ network. Of course, apps will enable us humans to monitor and interact with machines and participate in collaborative decision-making.

The Chatbot is learning to serve us better

Thanks to the rapid advances in Natural Language Processing (NLP),  chatbot technology has evolved from being limited to menu or keywords to now having a personality of its own with the ability to solve problems by understanding the intent of the user interacting with it. Contextual Chatbots are now capable of processing payments, having a voice conversation with a human being instead of text-based chats and with the help of Machine Learning, ‘remember’ preferences or choices of individuals and get better at serving customers by learning from each conversation. 2020 might well accelerate the use cases of conversational AI to include:

  • Personal Health/Medical Assistant
  • Virtual Assistant within a Mobile Banking App
  • Shop Assistant that helps with product discovery and purchase

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) finally becomes a viable alternative

With Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM), security concerns in allowing employees access to business data and applications from myriad personal devices can be allayed to the satisfaction of all corporate stakeholders. The apps or modules within EMM allows the IT infrastructure team to effectively secure enterprise data by:

  • Creating a unique device profile
  • Controlling installation and management of apps
  • Managing identity of authorized personnel and bolstering security through multi-factor authentication and
  • Using authentication to allow access to content

With that, we welcome you to mobile technology in 2020.
